There are times when an unexpected opportunity comes our way, a chance to be part of Tikun Olam. Based on the experience achieved by Yadid La Hinuch during Covid 19 we have an opportunity to assist Afghan refugees by learning from a distance that we developed for English students.

IsraAID - a non- profit humanitarian organization has helped rescue Afghans who were at risk since the Taliban seized control over the country. After escaping the country, the Afghans arrived in Albania in October and have been waiting to get permission to be resettled in countries that will accept them. The IsraAID team provides ongoing assistance to the refugees while they are staying in Albania. The mission to save Afghan nationals was the initiative of Israeli journalist Danna Harman, (daughter of Prof. David Harman, member of the Board of Directors of Yadid La Hinuch) who gathered a group of friends to try to rescue the Afghans.

We need Volunteers that are willing to help the refugees "brush- up" their English by talking to them on WhatsApp video twice a week for about 45 minutes. There is an added value of connecting with people that are in a challenging time in their life and the ability to create a personal relationship in addition to assisting in English. I am assisting a lovely young couple and we have already shared our family stories and recipes. The smiles on our faces when we meet are priceless. We already have three additional volunteers participating and there is a need for more. It is very easy to manage. I match you up with one of the Afghan refugees and send you their phone number. You reach out to them by sending a message. once they answer, you set a time and you are ready for your first video chat on WhatsApp. We suggest that the first call be introducing each other, getting to know their story and assessment of their English level. The main goal is to assist in speaking and understanding. We are happy to assist in professional guidance.
